With a long, complex legacy and a more complex story, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain may be the game to finally end the story of the Snakes by bringing it full circle. Although this isn’t the first time he’s said so, visionary director/producer/writer/designer Hideo Kojima may finally leave his beloved Metal Gear series behind after The Phantom Pain. Needless to say, that puts Metal Gear Solid V on the path to be the best, largest, and most ambitious Metal Gear game to date. From what we’ve seen so far, that may just be the case.

The weapon applications are similarly impressive. Torque Bows, Longshot Snipers, Gnashers – they all hurt just as much as they did in the originals. Even the unique Active Reload mechanic is (somewhat) emulated via the “fast fingers” perk for the Sniper class. Seeing the wide array of Gears weapons in action from a birds-eye view is pretty fr

The game’s combat medics have a stim ability that lets them heal injured teammates. Even though their healing range is wide, the medic should never be far from everyone; they might be unable to reach a downed teammate in time. The medics also have other healing abilities, like the overpowered recovery patch. If the player makes good use of them, the unit will almost never suffer fatalit

Starring the renamed Punished “Venom” Snake, formerly Naked Snake or Big Boss (not to be confused with Solid Snake), Metal Gear Solid V will be about advancing through open environments, doing missions and accomplishing objectives to combat Cipher, an organization which struck a blow against Snake’s previous mercenary group Militaires Sans Frontières in the Metal Gear Solid V prologue Ground Zeroes. All the while, players will be building up a new organization, recruiting troops they find out on the field and acquiring resources to improve their armaments and resources. Heading a new private military company called Diamond Dogs, Venom Snake seeks to build a new free army, upgrade his headquarters of Mother Base, take vengeance on Cipher and likely even more as the story unfolds.

A standard in the customization of soldiers for turn-based strategy games, each class has a skill tree that can be upgraded to allow them all to do different things. In Gears Tactics, the skills fall into four different subclasses for each cl

The game is similar to the other Gears of War games in that it’s fast-paced and incredibly aggressive. It feels like a Gears game, only that it’s now overhead and focused more on strategy . For gamers who love Gears of War and similar games like XCOM , this is like a dream mash-up between the ga

Also, some of the achievement names are very amusing. The whole list can be found here , but one of the best is named “Aw man, I shot Marvin in the face,” which is to down a Gear with friendly fire. Also, difficult ones that require players to beat a mission on insane difficulty with a single soldier can be fun to go af

Other than a brief foray into the Pop! figure world, Gears of War has always been a third-person cover shooter. Across all six entries so far, players have come to expect Gears games to play a certain way. Slide into cover, pop up and blast the grubs. Despite this, Gears is a franchise with tons of potential in different genres, which is something Splash Damage hopes to take advantage of with Gears Tactics. Embracing the turned-based strategy genre, Splash Damage has created a new type of Gears SLG Game Beginner Guide that aims to blend this genre with the franchise’s roots. Is Gear Tactics another excellent addition to the franchise or does it need more time at boot camp?

It is especially lucky for this class that one of the first skill available is one of the most useful in the entire game: Fast Fingers. The automatic reload on a hit at the skill’s first level is incredibly beneficial, but the second level is where the ability truly shines. Getting an action point refund along with the reload is effectively a reset for the Sniper – a clean slate and a whole turn if used as an opener, or a last minute surge of damage if used to close out the ro

While Gears Tactics doesn’t have the mod support XCOM 2 has, there are a few mods on the market that can improve or change the game. Most of them have to do with rebalancing weapons, spawning more enemies in missions, and changes to loot boxes. These mods can either be to make the game easier or harder, depending on which

Once deployed, players may notice that there is no mini-map or radar. Instead, players will need to go into the menu to view the map, which is also where mission start points will be marked and where the side ops zones are laid out. The selected buddy will also accompany you and aid you in general and specific ways. D-Dog, for example, can spot out and mark enemies for you and attack or distract someone at your command. If he has the stealth suit on, D-Dog can even mount the targeted enemy’s shoulders and stick a stun rod into his face. Meanwhile, D-Walker, a ride-able smaller-sized mech, can be a mode of loud or silent transportation, but also a mobile turret. On the map, missions and side ops are indicated differently; side ops are a general area while missions have specific start points. Side ops range from a variety of things and can hold more than just an asset. A side op to capture a soldier with a specific skill can also contain a hostage with another special skill which can aid in your R&D back at Mother Base. Along the way, resources, blueprints, music tracks, and many other things can be collected to benefit the player and Mother Base, encouraging the player to explore. Speaking of, there are many development trees for different weapons and tools, including the attachments that go with them. Getting a blueprint, be it from some scared soldier or on a table, could mean unlocking the next upgrade for your favorite rifle.
