Every summer, the city of Las Vegas transforms into the absolute epicenter of the global poker community.

Today, the WSOP is a massive corporate spectacle, broadcast live on international television and featuring massive corporate sponsorships.

We will explore the legendary “Moneymaker Effect” that triggered the massive online poker boom, and examine how the WSOP completely changed the way the world views a simple card game.

From the smoky backrooms of the Horseshoe Casino to the massive ballrooms of the modern mega-resorts, the stakes have never been higher.

The Origins: Benny Binion and the Texas Gamblers

After fleeing a massive turf war in Dallas, Binion relocated to Las Vegas and opened Binion’s Horseshoe Casino on the gritty, neon-drenched Fremont Street in 1951.

In 1970, Binion decided to host a massive promotional event at the Horseshoe. He invited exactly seven of the most famous, heavily bankrolled underground poker players in the country (mostly Texans) to his casino.

At the end of the grueling, smoke-filled session, the players simply held a secret ballot to vote on who was the absolute best player among them.

The following year, in 1971, Binion made a crucial, industry-changing decision: he changed the format from a cash game to a “Freezeout” tournament with a massive $5,000 entry fee.

How an Accountant Changed Poker Forever

For the next three decades, the WSOP grew steadily, moving from the $5,000 entry fee to the now-standard $10,000 Main Event buy-in.

Moneymaker traveled to the Horseshoe, sat down against a field of 839 hardened professionals, and against all mathematical odds, won the entire tournament.

The narrative was absolutely irresistible: an amateur accountant named Moneymaker, who learned to play online from his couch, had defeated the greatest professional gamblers on earth to win a massive $2.5 million prize.

The combination of the Hole Card Camera and Moneymaker’s incredible Cinderella story triggered a massive, global phenomenon known as the “Moneymaker Effect.”

How the WSOP Became a Billion-Dollar Brand

The massive explosion of player entries triggered by the online poker boom completely overwhelmed the small, historic Binion’s Horseshoe casino.

The modern WSOP is a massive logistical undertaking, featuring over 80 distinct “bracelet events” spread out over two months, covering every conceivable variation of poker (Omaha, Seven Card Stud, Razz, etc.).

In 2022, the WSOP moved again, taking up residence on the massive, glamorous Las Vegas Strip at the Horseshoe and Paris casinos, signaling its final transition from an underground hustle to mainstream entertainment.

The Growth of the World Series

The Era The Field Size The Winner
The Beginning A tiny group of Texas legends. Johnny Moss (The First Champion)
1989 178 Phil Hellmuth
2004 2,576 Greg Raymer
2006 8,773 (The Pre-UIGEA Peak) Jamie Gold
The Modern Era The tournament continues to break records despite the heavy regulation of online poker in the US. Daniel Weinman wins $12.1 Million, the largest first-place prize in Main Event history.

More Than Just Money: The WSOP Hardware

  • The Ultimate Status Symbol: In professional golf, players chase Green Jackets. In poker, players chase the WSOP Gold Bracelet. It is the absolute highest honor in the game.
  • The Bracelet Leaderboard: The race to catch Phil Hellmuth is a massive storyline every single summer. Phil Ivey and Johnny Chan trail far behind with 10 bracelets each.
  • The Championship Jewelry: The Main Event bracelet is specifically designed every year by luxury jewelers and is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars purely in raw materials.
  • The Online Bracelets: A highly controversial move, some purists argue that winning a bracelet online from your bedroom diminishes the prestige of the live Vegas events.

The World Series of Poker is a testament to the enduring, incredible appeal of a game that perfectly blends complex mathematics with raw, psychological intuition.

The cards are in the air. Shuffle up and deal.
