What is Stress Urinary Incontinence?

Stress urinary incontinence is the unintentional passing of urine. Stress incontinence tends to occur when the bladder is under pressure, such as when you cough or laugh. This is a very common problem which affects millions of people. It is generally caused by a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and the urethral sphincter.
There are certain factors which can increase the likelihood of stress urinary incontinence occurring, such as pregnancy, vaginal childbirth, family history of incontinence, obesity, or simply from ageing.
As this can negatively affect your life, many people will choose to seek out treatment. You can undertake pelvic floor exercises or try medication, however, this may not be a completely effective solution. Surgical procedures are also available. However, for those who do not wish to undergo a surgical procedure, laser treatment may be a option.
IncontiLase is a non-invasive laser treatment that improves stress urinary incontinence. This is achieved by shrinking the urethral and anterior bladder wall region.

This procedure is completed using Fotona’s Er:YAG laser.

What To Expect

Your consultation takes place at our Baker Street clinic. Our team will take a full medical and gynaecological history, assess the type and severity of urinary incontinence, and confirm whether IncontiLase is appropriate. A current normal cervical smear result is required before treatment can begin. Active vaginal or urinary tract infections must be resolved before proceeding. The number of sessions required is discussed at this appointmenttypically two sessions for mild to moderate incontinence, more for severe cases. A written treatment plan and itemised cost are confirmed before you leave. £1,200 per session; £3,600 for a full course of three sessions.

No special preoperative preparations are required for IncontiLase. No fasting is needed. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. Ensure you have a current normal cervical smear result — treatment cannot proceed without this. Any active vaginal or urinary tract must be fully resolved before begins. There are no on eating, drinking, or medication before your session.

IncontiLase takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes per session. No anaesthetic is required. A Fotona vaginal handpiece delivers Er:YAG laser energy using the patented SMOOTH® mode to the pelvic fascia and vaginal mucosa, particularly targeting the urethral and anterior wall region. The effect triggers collagenshrinking and tightening the urethral support structures to reduce involuntary leakage. You may feel mild warmth during the procedure. Once complete, you can dress and leave immediately. No recovery time is required. Avoid sexual activity for 72 hours after each session.

Improvement in incontinence symptoms is typically noticed after the first or second session as collagen remodelling progressively strengthens the urethral support. Clinical data shows 81% of women with severe stress urinary incontinence were symptom-free or had very mild symptoms following IncontiLase treatment. Two sessions at monthly intervals are standard for mild to moderate incontinence; additional sessions may be required for severe cases. Results are stable for up to 18 months. Annual maintenance sessions of one session per year are recommended. If dryness is also a concern, RenovaLase can be incorporated into your treatment course at the same appointment.
